George has many years of experience designing and delivering consulting assignments for a wide range of organisations. The approach to consulting is based on two key factors: (i) bringing and sharing expertise with the participants about the scenarios process and its link with strategy development, and (ii) coaching and empowering individuals and client organisations to enable them to learn and unlearn from the consulting project, ensuring sustainable performance in the future.
It is important for client organisations to appreciate that there is no ‘one size’ fits all scenario and strategy consulting projects. Each organisation is unique and each situation facing them is unique. Equally, it is important for client organisations to appreciate that as they are thinking about the future (direction of their organisation) then they should be open to previously unthought ideas. Such unthought ideas may lead to new innovative products or services; or may result in participants re-thinking the nature of the organisation and its basis of success and competitive advantage.
Initial discussions about the opportunities and challenges faced by and concerns of the management team are key for joint understanding and development of the design of the consulting project. If the consulting project is commissioned the next step is for each member of the management team to be interviewed. These interviews are conducted on a one-to-one and face-to-face basis. The intention is to understand individual’s thoughts and concerns. These interviews are analysed, anonymised, and then shared with the collective management team. This is a fundamental step to ensure that there is a space for constructive discussion to identify the agreed agenda for the project. Consulting projects are likely to have an elapsed delivery period of time, providing space for reflection, and to allow the management team to carry on with everyday operations.
